Pair of Regency Giltwood Wall Sconces, ca 1820

FRENCH GILDED BRASS CARRIAGE CLOCK

A French 8-day carriage clock with a Doucine or Serpentine shaped gilded brass case.

The case has bevelled glass sides, rear door and top panel which allow visibility of the clock mechanism. The platform escapement and associated clock speed regulator are clearly visible through the top panel.

This clock features a hand painted enamelled clock face, depicting three galloping horse riders, dressed in the Louis XV period style, with trees and shrubs in the background and under a cloudy sky.

The upper and lower friezes are encased in pierced gilded brass decoration.

This beautiful clock is overall in excellent condition. It has been cleaned throughout, lightly lubricated and is running well, with good time keeping.

This particular clock style was a speciality of the French clockmakers Duverdrey & Blouquel. The style was introduced in the late 19th Century and housed high quality mechanisms. Their clocks were defined by the top and bottom sections having a distinctive ogee, or serpentine shape, often with decorative friezes.
