Pair of Regency Giltwood Wall Sconces, ca 1820
Bronze after Jules Bonheur (1827-1907) Steeplchase, ca 1920.
A very impressive large cast bronze depicting a pair of racehorse ridden by jockeys, taking a fence. It is highly detailed with a naturalistic base. It is signed I. Bonheur.
Circa 1920.
It has been mounted on a later marble plinth.
Isidore Jules Bonheur, best known as one of the 19th century’s most distinguished French animalier sculptors. Bonheur began his career as an artist working with his elder sister Rosa Bonheur in the studio of their father, drawing instructor Raymond Bonheur.
Rosa Bonheur, was a a very accomplished artist and her oil on canvas of “The Horse Market” hangs in the National Gallery.
