Pair of Regency Giltwood Wall Sconces, ca 1820

18th Century Stumpwork Art. Religious Artefact depicting Saint Raymond Nonnatus

A very interesting painting depicting Saint Raymond Nonnatus which I believe to be painted on vellum. The image is very finely painted and sits at the centre of an elaborate Stumpwork panel.

It is embroidered extravagantly in gold and silver metal thread and other elements of stumpwork including woven metal.

The frame appears to be original and the glass has been replaced. It is Spanish and would have hung in a church or monastery.

SAINT RAYMOND NONNATUS
Raymond is the patron saint of childbirth, midwives, children, pregnant women, and priests defending the confidentiality of confession.

Raymond was born at Portella, Catalonia, Spain. He was delivered by caesarean operation when his mother died in childbirth. Hence his name non natus (not born).
He later became a Catalan Dominican Friar.
