About this piece
A Fine Nymphenburg Porcelain Figure of a Reclining Great Dane by Theodor Kärner
An elegant and beautifully modelled porcelain figure of a reclining Great Dane, produced by the prestigious Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory in Bavaria.
Designed by the distinguished German sculptor Theodor Kärner (1884–1966) in the early 20th century, the figure depicts a Great Dane resting with its head lowered, its long, slender forelegs extended and its tail gracefully curved around its hindquarters.
The exceptionally sensitive modelling captures both the strength and elegance of the breed.
The underside bears the impressed Nymphenburg factory shield and model number 151, together with the painted initials J.H., possibly identifying the porcelain painter Johann Hahrer.
An excellent example of the naturalistic animal sculpture for which Nymphenburg became internationally renowned.
