About this piece
An exceptionally well-modelled German porcelain figure of a seated Great Dane, modelled by Konrad Schmid and produced at the celebrated Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory in Bavaria during the early 20th century.
The imposing dog is depicted in an alert, upright position, with finely modelled cropped ears, a powerful chest and beautifully observed musculature. The naturalistic decoration combines warm fawn tones with subtle grey shading, complemented by a finely detailed black muzzle and expressive eyes.
The figure bears the impressed Nymphenburg factory shield and model number 633, together with the painted initials J.H., possibly those of Johann Hahrer, a decorator associated with the manufactory.
A particularly attractive example of Nymphenburg's distinguished tradition of animal sculpture.
