Pair of Regency Giltwood Wall Sconces, ca 1820

Oil on Canvas depicting a Suffolk Barge Horse

An early 19th century oil on canvas depicting a barge horse on a tow path.
This finely executed but unsigned painting was almost certainly painted at Flatford Mill in Suffolk where John Constable (1776-1837) painted “The Hay Wain” and other famous works.
It is in very good condition and has had a very light clean but nothing more. The original gilded wooden frame is substantial and good condition.

Provenance: The painting was from the estate of the late Lord Andrew Phillips (1939-2023). Lord Philips lived his whole life here in Suffolk and was well known for his passionate interest in Suffolk history and its people.
He collected paintings from Suffolk artists depicting local scenes.
