A very good and striking example of a Measham Bargeware teapot on matching stand of large proportions.
In very good condition with no restoration. It bears the inscription “A present to Mr J Perkins 1909.”
This rustic brown lead-glazed style, with applied decoration is known as ‘Measham Ware’ or the more general ‘Barge ware’, as it is associated with use on canal boats. Most ‘Measham ware’ was actually produced in Church Gresley, Derbyshire, between the years 1870-1910.
The teapot often bears the applied message ‘A present to a friend’ indicating the role of such wares as personal gifts.
