From the Circle of Richard Westell (1765-1836), an oil on canvas depicting a group of cave explorers holding a burning torch and clearly making a surprising discovery.
It’s a nicely painted early oil which tells a story. The painting came from the estate of the late Sir George Solti (1912-1997) whose main residence had been in London.
Sir George Solti, original name Gyorgy Stern Solti, was born in Budapest. He was a Hungarian-born British conductor who became conductor of the Chicago Symphony orchestra in 1969.
This painting became available after the recent death of his wife Lady Valerie Solti.
