Pair of Regency Giltwood Wall Sconces, ca 1820
Bronze by Franz Bergman (1861-1936) The Exotic Dancer
A good late 19th century cold painted and gilt bronze in the form of a female exotic dancer. Beautifully sculpted, Bergman has demonstrated a sense of rhythmic and sensual movement exaggerated by her swirling skirt which she holds up at each side.
The skirt has hinges each side which lift up to reveal her naked body.
She is mounted on a rouge marble base which is draped with a realistically modelled oriental carpet. Parts of the carpet, her costume, jewellery and head-dress are highlighted in red and green enamel. Signed verso “Nam Greb” together with the impressed letter B within an urn shaped cartouche for Franz Bergman Foundry.
Franz Xavier Bergman signed several of his erotic works with the pseudonym ‘Nam Greb’ (Bergman in reverse), ‘N. Greb’ or sometimes merely with the letter B inside an urn shaped cartouche which is thought to be an attempt to appear anonymous so as to avoid possible civil condemnation or penalties for lewdness or immorality.
A really fabulous piece and In very good condition commensurate with age.
