The boxes themselves are painted and gilded.  <\/p>\n<p>It dates to around 1900 and is in very good condition commensurate with age. The chess pieces are in very good condition with no chips or losses. This is the most beautiful and elaborate set we have ever seen. It is both practical for playing chess and an impressive addition to any room.<\/p>\n<p>The board when assembled measures 53cm square.
