\nScanlon was an Irish artist who specialised in portrait groups illustrating the humour in Irish society.
\nThis pair of watercolours shows men in a tavern and pays particular attention to their faces.
\nVery skilfully executed and full of Irish humour. Signed and dated 1830 and 1840.
\nR.R. Scanlan”s works have become very collectable and sadly hard to come by.
\nThere are signs of yellowing commensurate with age, however, the paintings themselves are in good condition.
\nThe actual watercolours measure 21cm X 27cm. Framed they measure 41cm x 46cm<\/p>\n
BIOGRAPHY.
\nRobert Richard Scanlan (1801\u20131876), sometimes known as R. R. Scanlan, was an Irish painter and portraitist.
\n A resident of Dublin in the 1820s, he exhibited portraits at the Royal Hibernian Academy (1826\u20131864), and was later Master of the Cork School of Design.[1] He painted portraits and watercolour portrait groups, described by Professor Anne Crookshank of Trinity College Dublin as charmingly evocative of the leisured society of Victorian Ireland.[2] He spent his later life in London and exhibited at the Royal Academy (1837\u20131859).
